The other day I was checking my Facebook news feed and I saw a post that caught my attention. The person shared the following, “Yesterday, a financial advisor messaged me on LinkedIn, asking to talk to me about being my financial advisor. I didn’t respond. Today, he added me to his email list without my permission.” She added, “I’ve never met/spoken with him, he was in one of my speaking audiences a few months ago. I am curious, what would you do in this situation?”
Honestly, I felt horrible for him. Not only did he not get her as a client, he was also being ridiculed on social media. Some people were compassionate with their comments, but most commenters told her to block him, report him to his email provider, and complain to his manager. I must say, this isn’t good for business.
All of this could have been avoided had this financial advisor been prepared to market his services and not just winging it. What you don’t know can and will hurt your business and also hold you back from making the positive contribution you desire to make. This isn’t an isolated case. I’ve experienced this myself many times. It’s a turn-off.
To make sure you do not make similar mistakes and ensure that you get clients with proper online marketing strategies, here are 3 simple strategies to assist you in effectively using online strategies to attract more clients:
Strategy #1 – Identify Your Ideal Client
Clearly, the financial advisor has an aggressive personality – a real go-getter. On the other hand, the person he was reaching out to wasn’t the aggressive type. Simply put, his approach didn’t fit with hers. When you know your ideal client, you’d know what to say to excite them, instead of turning them off.
Crafting an ideal client profile is crucial to help you find the correct words, terms, and needs your clients have. Another way of looking at this is considering your clients to be a version of YOU! If you are a go-getter, use common sense and go after other go-getter clients because they can relate to and appreciate your approach.
Strategy #2 – Be Social Media Friendly
It’s in the name – social media… it is a media used for socializing (not sell). Social media is used to build relationships by first getting to know someone, creating a connection, and building trust.
Quite honestly, social media strategies are not the best ways to quickly attract clients. It is a media that needs to be cultivated, it takes time. If you want clients faster then network in person locally.
Strategy #3 – Avoid Spamming at All Cost
Email marketing is a blessing for many business owners because it is cost effective. However, when you misuse it, it can be lethal. In no way, shape or form is the purpose of email marketing to spam people. The best practice is to ask if you can add them to your email list. Give them a chance to accept or decline.
OH! Also, let them know what they are subscribing to beforehand. You’ll be a lot more successful if you email them useful information such as tips, tricks, and shortcuts. This is also a marketing strategy used to cultivate relationships and build like and trust.
As you can see winging it only holds you back…In a nutshell, when it comes to attracting ideal clients online, you’ll want to utilize marketing strategies that make sense. What I see working is to market in a way that honors who you are. Your marketing is the first impression your prospects have of you – make it great!
